Gallery de New York, en compagnie de Fran\u00e7oise Janicot et Nil Yalter, l\u2019\u0153uvre de Hessie ait \u00e9t\u00e9 oubli\u00e9e pendant plus de trente ans ? Certes, loin des cercles d\u2019influence parisiens, et occup\u00e9e par ses enfants et son peintre de mari, Hessie a connu et ressenti les assym\u00e9tries qui s\u2019exercent dans le monde de l\u2019art : en tant que femme, noire et militante, elle a v\u00e9cu de multiples s\u00e9gr\u00e9gations. Il existe sans doute de bien nombreuses Hessie \u00e0 travers le monde, mais artistiquement, Hessie reste unique, par la d\u00e9licatesse de ses \u0153uvres qui \u00e9galent l\u2019acuit\u00e9 de son propos, qu\u2019elle nomme \u00ab Survival Art \u00bb : \u00ab Art de chacun et de tous \u2014 Art anonyme, Art de vivre et de survivre par-del\u00e0 la bourrasque, par-dessus la d\u00e9mission. \u00bb Un discours \u00e0 la fois social, politique et identitaire, qui marque son engagement, sa lucidit\u00e9 et son int\u00e9grit\u00e9. Une \u0153uvre si singuli\u00e8re qu\u2019elle conserve aujourd\u2019hui intactes son urgence et sa vibration.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Text by Fran\u00e7ois Piron \u2013 20 years Art Paris Art Fair \u00ab French Scene \u00bb<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Hessie \u2013 Arnaud Lefebvre Gallery<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>How is it possible that after a solo show at ARC in 1975, making her debuts in Yvon Lambert\u2019s prestigious gallery, exhibitions in Sweden (Lund Konsthall in 1978) and the USA, notably at New York\u2019s famous A.I.R. Gallery alongside Fran\u00e7oise Janicot and Nil Yalter, Hessie was completely forgotten for more than thirty years? It is true that she was far from influential Parisian circles and kept busy by her children and painter husband, but one thing is sure: Hessie experienced first hand the inequalities of the art world. As a black, militant woman, she was the subject of multiple discriminations and, although there are undoubtedly many other \u201cHessies\u201d all over the world, she is, from an artistic viewpoint, totally unique. Unique because of the delicate nature of her work, which is only equalled by the perspicacity of her message. <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Hessie described her work as : \u201cSurvival Art &#8211; art of each individual and all of us, anonymous Art, art of living and survival beyond the squall, above resignation.\u201d Her message was social and political, as well as addressing the question of ethnicity. It was a mark of her commitment, lucidity and integrity.
