La galerie Arnaud Lefebvre est très heureuse de présenter une exposition de Katy Martin et Bill Brand, à partir du jeudi 10 novembre. Les deux artistes, qui forment un couple, sont en conversation depuis des années et leur exposition montre des thèmes en commun.

Les deux artistes font des films et de la photographie et leurs moyens techniques proviennent du dessin et de la peinture. Tous les deux explorent le geste – et la marque qu'il laisse, la trace fugitive – en rapport avec l'œil, la main et le corps en mouvement. Le plus souvent, le corps dont il s'agit est le leur. C'est le corps qui bouge devant et derrière la caméra ou l'appareil photo.


KATY MARTIN :
"Je peins directement sur ma peau puis fais une photo que je tire digitalement. L'image finale obtenue se présente sous forme d'épreuve digitale sur un papier pur coton."

L'art de Katy — de la peinture sur la peau — porte sur la fluidité des frontières, et sur la peau elle-même en tant que bordure poreuse qui bouge et change continuellement. La préoccupation actuelle de Katy est la verticalité dans la peinture chinoise et le mouvement horizontal des formes d'écriture cursive occidentale.

Katy prévoit d'exposer quatre grandes photos non encadrées, mesurant 147 x 76 cm chacune. Cela fera un contrepoint à l'installation de Bill qui consiste en des dessins et peintures à l'encre sur papier, accrochés sur toute la surface du mur, plus sa vidéo.


BILL BRAND :
Le premier travail qui m'a fait connaître dans les années 1970 était formel et abstrait, mais depuis longtemps je fais aussi un travail intime qui se rapporte à l'histoire de ma propre famille, à des amis ou des connaissances. Je pars de mon environnement immédiat, que ce soit chez moi, ou en résidence à Montévidéo et Shanghai. Dans ce travail il est souvent question de performances non narratives dans un paysage urbain, où la performance se réfère autant au cadrage du paysage qu'aux actions que pratiquent les personnes dans le paysage. Parfois je demande à des amis de choisir un lieu et puis d'intervenir dans ce lieu. Le travail est avant tout abstrait, fortuit et improvisé, il est davantage centré sur l'émotion passagère que sur la description ou sur l'histoire.

J'expose quatre peintures à l'encre sur papier non encadrées, montées sur un papier Xuan de fort grammage ou en fibres de mûrier. Je vais aussi montrer trois peintures à l'encre plus petites sur papier Xuan et un dessin au crayon encadré sur papier pur coton. Ce travail est entièrement relié au projet que j'ai commencé pendant notre résidence à Shanghai.


BIOGRAPHIES :
KATY MARTIN est une artiste plasticienne qui combine la peinture, la photographie et la performance. Elle fait aussi des films et de la vidéo. Son travail a été exposé au Museum of Modern Art, à l'Anthology Film Archives, à la PPOW Gallery, à la Saint Peter’s Church et au Tribeca Film Festival (New York); au Sackler Museum (Boston); à la Shanghai University (Chine); chez Alexander/Heath (Virginia) et — en tant que membre du Meeting Point Project — à la Galerie Double S (Paris et Pékin). En 2008, par l'intermédiaire de Artists Exchange International, Katy a été invitée par le Metropolitan Museum of Art a créer une nouvelle pièce à partir d'un objet de leur collection. Elle a choisi "Fish and Rocks" du peintre chinois du XVIIe siècle, Bada Shanren, et depuis lors se sent toujours influencée par son art.

BILL BRAND a présenté ses films expérimentaux et ses documentaires dans les musées, les festivals et chez les distributeurs associatifs du monde entier. Il y a eu notamment le Museum of Modern Art, le Whitney Museum et Anthology Film Archives (New York), Los Angeles Filmforum and Pacific Film Archives (Californie), Shanghai University (Chine), le Berlin Film Festival et le Rotterdam Film Festival. Son œuvre publique, "Masstransiscope" (cf. vidéo Youtube), une œuvre murale dans un tunnel du métro de New York qui s'anime par le déplacement du métro, fait partie de la collection permanente du MTA Arts and Design (Musée du métro). Il est professeur émérite au Hampshire College et enseigne la sauvegarde des films à la New York University.

The Arnaud Lefebvre Gallery is pleased to show a two-person exhibition by Katy Martin and Bill Brand, opening November 10. The two artists, who are married, have been in conversation for years, and their exhibition will show common themes.

Both artists work in film and photography, and their media art grows out of drawing and painting. Both explore gesture – and mark making, the fleeting trace – in relation to the eye, the hand and the performing body. More often than not, that body is their own. It’s the body that moves in front of and behind the camera.

KATY MARTIN:
I paint directly on my skin, which I then photograph and print out digitally. The final images exist as digital prints on cotton rag paper.

Katy's art - paint on skin - is about the fluidity of borders, and skin itself as a porous boundary that continually shifts and changes. Katy's current preoccupation is verticality in Chinese painting and the horizontal movement of western handwriting forms.

Katy plans to show four large unframed prints, measuring 58" x 30" each (147 cm x 76 cm). This will form a counterpoint to Bill's installation that consists of drawings and ink paintings on paper, hung salon style, plus his video.

BILL BRAND:
I became known in the 1970s for work that is formal and abstract, but for a long while my work has also been personal, relating to my own family history or to friends and acquaintances. I work from my immediate surroundings, at home or on residencies in Montevideo and Shanghai. This work often involves non-narrative performance in urban landscape where performance refers as much to the framing of the landscape as it does to the actions of performing subjects in the landscape. Sometimes I ask friends to choose a locale and then perform an action within it. The work is primarily abstract, casual and improvisatory, centered more on fleeting emotion than on description or story.

I will show four unframed ink paintings on xuan paper, mounted on heavy weight xuan paper or mulberry paper. I will also show three smaller framed ink paintings on xuan paper and one framed pencil drawing on cotton rag paper. This work is all related to the project I started during our residency in Shanghai.

BIOGRAPHY:
KATY MARTIN is visual artist whose work combines painting, photography and performance. She also makes film and video. Her work has been exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, Anthology Film Archives, PPOW Gallery, Saint Peter’s Church and The Tribeca Film Festival (New York); The Sackler Museum (Boston); Shanghai University (Shanghai); Alexander/Heath (Virginia) and – as part of The Meeting Point Project – Galerie Double S (Paris and Beijing). In 2008, through Artists Exchange International, Katy was invited by the Metropolitan Museum of Art to create a new work based on an object in their collection. She chose Fish and Rocks by the 17th century Chinese painter, Bada Shanren, and she has been influenced by his art ever since.

BILL BRAND’s experimental and documentary films, videos and installations have been exhibited worldwide in museums, festivals and microcinemas. These include The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum and Anthology Film Archives (New York); Los Angeles Filmforum and Pacific Film Archives (California); Shanghai University (China); and The Berlin Film Festival and Rotterdam Film Festival. His public artwork, Masstransiscope, a mural in a NYC subway tunnel that is animated by the movement of passing trains, is in the permanent collection of the MTA Arts and Design. He is Professor Emeritus at Hampshire College and teaches film preservation at New York University.
