Cette exposition se propose de mettre à jour les liens entre deux personnalités du cinéma expérimental américain : Hollis Frampton (1936-1984) et Robert Huot (né en 1935). Amis et collaborateurs, leur filmographie respective fait montre de nombreux renvois réciproques, dans les thématiques et l'approche minimaliste de la mise en scène, mais aussi dans les contributions, l'un et l'autre pouvant apparaître dans les films de chacun, Frampton intervenant pour Huot en tant que caméraman, ou lui dédicaçant un film.
Ici, c'est à travers six films de Robert Huot que s'affichera ce lien de fond ou de forme, depuis Black and White Film de 1968 pour lequel Frampton tient la caméra, jusqu'à Hollis Frampton de 1984, tourné pendant les funérailles de ce dernier. L'exposition sera introduite par le cinéaste Nicolas Clair lors d'une conférence en trois temps donnée le soir de l'ouverture :
« J'ai eu connaissance de la Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre il y a quelques années, alors que j'effectuais des recherches sur Hollis Frampton, pour la rédaction d'un mémoire de fin d'études sur le cycle inachevé Magellan – un film de 36 heures qui devait, parmi diverses propositions, “refaire l'histoire du Film tel qu'il aurait dû être�. Le mémoire se terminait par ma traduction d'un ensemble de nouvelles ayant pour titre Mind over Matter (L’esprit supérieur à la matière), écrites par Frampton durant la réalisation du cycle. Lors de la publication dans la revue October à l'automne 1978, Mind over Matter a été décrit comme étant “sa première œuvre de fiction�. À l'occasion de l'exposition “Frampton/Huot� organisée par Arnaud Lefebvre et à laquelle il m'a invité à participer, je propose de donner une lecture de cette traduction et une introduction au cycle Magellan.
Si Hollis Frampton a bien souvent été perçu comme l'un des cinéastes les plus intellectuels de son temps, et ses films et essais d'un abord difficile, il apparaît aussi, pour qui s'est un peu plongé dans son œuvre qu'elle est très souvent marquée par des récits obliques, des rebondissements inattendus. Mind over Matter témoigne de cette attraction pour la fable et l'ironie. À travers ces courts récits qui empruntent à Borges et Beckett, il nous est alors possible d'entrevoir, un peu, ce qu'aurait pu être ce film encyclopédique et comique resté inachevé. » (Nicolas Clair)

> Nicolas Clair est né en 1984 à Oyonnax. Il a fait une partie de ses études à la Villa Arson – école des Beaux-Arts de Nice. Il a terminé récemment un film de 70 minutes, Pinocchio (vidéo, couleur, son, musique).

This exhibition examines the connections between two well-known figures of American experimental cinema: Hollis Frampton (1936-1984) and Robert Huot (born in 1935). Friends and collaborators, their respective filmography shows many cross-references that are both thematic and stylistic, such as their minimalist approach. They also participate in each other’s films: one appears in the films of the other; Frampton helps Huot as a cameraman, or dedicates a film to him.
Here in the gallery, six movies by Robert Huot will display these connections, beginning with Black and White Film (1968), where Frampton holds the camera, and ending with Hollis Frampton (1984), shot during his funeral. Filmmaker Nicolas Clair will introduce the exhibition with a three-part lecture on the opening night:
“I discovered the Arnaud Lefebvre Gallery a few years ago, while doing research on Hollis Frampton for a dissertation about the unfinished Magellan cycle – a 36 hour film which proposes to: “rewrite the history of Film as it should have been.� The dissertation ended with my translation of a set of short stories: Mind over Matter, written by Frampton during the making of the cycle. For its publication in the journal October, in autumn 1978, Mind over Matter has been described as “his first work of fiction.� For the exhibition “Frampton / Huot� organized by Arnaud Lefebvre, I propose to give a reading of this translation and an introduction to the Magellan cycle.
If Hollis Frampton has often been considered as one of the most intellectual filmmakers of his time, and his films difficult to grasp, it also appears, for those who enter his work, that it’s often marked by oblique stories, unexpected twists. Mind over Matter shows this attraction to fable and irony. Through these short stories that borrow from Borges and Beckett, we can foresee what this encyclopedic and comical unfinished film might have been.� (Nicolas Clair)
